David was born in Sri Lanka to Scottish parents and on his return to Scotland became a member of the Warrender Baths Club; this was where he began to develop his Breaststroke technique.
David’s first medal was at the 1970 Commonwealth Games which was held in Edinburgh, where he won a Bronze in the 200m Breaststroke. In 1972 at the Munich Olympics, he won Silver in the 200m Breaststroke; however David had gained the reputation of avoiding hard work, but this result showed that he had a natural ability.
In 1974, David continued to gain medals, with Silver in the 100m Breaststroke, Gold in the 200m breaststroke and Gold in the 200m Individual Medley. In 1976, at the Montreal Olympics, David won Gold for his 200m Breaststroke getting a world-record time and then Silver in the 100m breaststroke. In 1977 he was appointed an MBE for his services to swimming.
Since David retired from swimming he has remained active in the development of swimming aids and technology, having been noted as the first swimmer to wear both swim hat and goggles together in a competition to improve the streamline effect in the water.
